Inflammation, Healing and Your Spine: What the Latest Research Tells Us

Inflammation has a reputation problem. In popular health culture, it is frequently discussed as something to be eliminated. What this framing misses is that acute inflammation is not the problem: it is the solution. It is the body's primary healing mechanism, and without it, injuries do not heal. The clinical picture that warrants attention is chronic low-grade inflammation, a persistent, dysregulated inflammatory state that produces ongoing tissue damage rather than repair.

Acute Inflammation: The Necessary First Phase

When tissue is injured, the immediate inflammatory response is protective and necessary. Vasodilation and increased vascular permeability bring immune cells, growth factors and repair proteins to the damaged area. The heat, swelling, redness and pain of acute inflammation are the biological cost of healing, not evidence of harm.

The appropriate clinical response to acute inflammation is its management rather than suppression. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, while effective at reducing pain and swelling, have been shown in some studies to delay healing when used in the acute phase by suppressing the inflammatory signalling that initiates tissue repair.

Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation

Chronic low-grade inflammation is characterised by sustained activation of immune cells and inflammatory pathways without the resolution phase that terminates acute inflammation. Its drivers include poor diet, sleep deprivation, chronic psychological stress, sedentary behaviour, excess adipose tissue and gut dysbiosis.

For the spine specifically, chronic low-grade inflammation is associated with accelerated disc degeneration, increased facet joint inflammatory activity, and heightened sensitivity of spinal nociceptors, meaning the same degree of tissue change produces more pain in a chronically inflamed state than in a non-inflamed one.

What Chiropractic Care Does

Joint mobilisation has been shown to produce anti-inflammatory mediator release locally in treated joints. Parasympathetic nervous system activation, which chiropractic care reliably promotes, reduces systemic inflammatory tone. And addressing the mechanical causes of chronic tissue irritation, the joint restrictions and movement dysfunctions that maintain ongoing low-grade inflammatory signalling in spinal tissues, removes a persistent inflammatory driver.

At Clifton Chiro in Bristol, the inflammatory state of the spine is considered as part of the clinical picture, and patients are guided on lifestyle factors that influence systemic inflammation as part of the whole-person approach to care.
