Potting, Pruning and Posture: A Chiropractor's Guide to Plant Maintenance That Won't Hurt Your Back

For larger plants that cannot be moved, kneeling on a gardening pad rather than bending forward maintains a more neutral lumbar position than sustained flexion and significantly reduces posterior disc loading.

Pruning: Sustained Cervical Extension

Pruning overhead plants, whether suspended ceiling plants, plants on high shelves, or trained climbing plants, requires sustained cervical extension, the backward tilt of the head to look upward while the arms are elevated. Sustained cervical extension under any form of load, including simply the weight of the arms and tools, creates compressive loading on the posterior facet joints of the cervical spine and can aggravate existing upper neck patterns or trigger headaches.

The management strategy is time limitation and position variation. Rather than completing all overhead pruning in a single session, breaking it into multiple shorter sessions with periods of cervical neutral or slight flexion in between interrupts the sustained extension loading before fatigue and joint compression become significant. A step stool that brings the plant to a more comfortable visual and reach height can also substantially reduce the extension required.

Watering: The Daily Cumulative Load

Daily watering, performed thoughtfully, is a low-risk activity. Performed in the way that habit and convenience often determine, it becomes a source of significant daily cumulative spinal loading. The typical habitual watering posture involves repeated bending to low plants, reaching to high plants, and carrying watering cans that increase progressively in weight as the collection grows.

Investing in a long-spouted watering can that allows upright stance for lower plants, using a step for higher plants rather than sustained cervical extension, and keeping the can's filling level comfortable for carrying close to the body are practical changes that substantially reduce the cumulative daily load of a regular watering routine.

The Positive Balance

The physical and psychological benefits of plant maintenance are genuine and worth protecting. The purpose of biomechanical awareness is not to discourage the activity but to enable it to continue indefinitely.
