Headaches can be incredibly frustrating, particularly when they keep coming back and start interfering with your work, sleep or social life. Some people experience a dull, persistent ache, while others suffer from intense headaches that make it difficult to concentrate or carry on with everyday activities. At Clifton Chiro in Bristol, I regularly see patients who experience headaches alongside neck stiffness and muscular tension. With 26 years of clinical experience, I understand how important it is to identify the type of headache you’re experiencing and whether chiropractic care could help.
What Causes Headaches?
There are several different types of headaches, and understanding which one you have is an important first step.
Tension-type headaches are among the most common. They often feel like a dull ache or pressure around the head, sometimes described as having a tight band across the forehead or around the temples. They may be associated with stress, fatigue or muscle tenderness around the neck and shoulders.
Another type is a cervicogenic headache, which means the pain originates from structures within the neck. These headaches often begin at the base of the skull and may travel towards the forehead or behind one eye. They can sometimes be aggravated by particular neck movements or prolonged positions.
Migraines are different again. They are a neurological condition and can produce moderate to severe throbbing headaches, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Some people also experience visual disturbances, known as an aura, before a migraine begins.
Because these conditions have different causes, they do not all respond to the same treatment.
The Connection Between Neck Pain and Headaches
One of the things I frequently notice in patients visiting my Clifton chiropractic clinic is that headaches and neck discomfort often occur together.
The upper part of the cervical spine has close neurological connections with the areas involved in processing head pain. In certain circumstances, irritation of structures in the upper neck can contribute to headaches.
This is particularly relevant with cervicogenic headaches, where restricted or painful neck movement may be an important feature.
Many people working in offices around Clifton and Bristol also spend long periods looking at computer screens. Remaining in one position for extended periods can contribute to muscle tension and neck discomfort, which may accompany certain headaches.
However, it’s important to understand that not every headache associated with neck tension is caused by a spinal problem. Migraine itself can cause neck pain, so a careful assessment is essential.
How Can Chiropractic Help Headaches?
At Clifton Chiro, I begin by taking a detailed history of your symptoms. I’ll ask where your headaches occur, how often they happen, how long they last, and whether you experience symptoms such as nausea, dizziness or sensitivity to light.
I’ll also assess your neck movement, joint function and surrounding muscles, alongside any appropriate neurological examination.
If your headaches appear to have a musculoskeletal component, particularly if they originate from the neck, chiropractic treatment may be helpful.
Depending on your individual presentation, this could include gentle joint mobilisation, appropriate spinal adjustments, soft tissue treatment and exercises designed to improve neck movement and muscular function.
My approach is always gentle and tailored to what is appropriate for you. I don’t believe in applying the same treatment to everyone, especially when headaches can have several different underlying causes.
For some people with cervicogenic headaches, a combination of manual treatment and specific exercises can help reduce pain and improve function.
The aim is not simply to provide short-term relief, but to help you understand any contributing factors and manage your symptoms more effectively.
Can Chiropractic Help Migraines?
Migraines require a slightly different approach because they are primarily a neurological condition rather than a problem caused by spinal joint restrictions.
Some people with migraines also experience significant neck pain and muscle tension. Where these symptoms are present, gentle chiropractic care may help with associated musculoskeletal discomfort.
However, chiropractic treatment is not an established primary treatment for migraine itself, and I would never suggest that spinal adjustments can cure migraines.
If your symptoms suggest migraine, I’ll discuss the importance of an accurate diagnosis and appropriate medical management. Your GP can advise on migraine-specific medication and preventive treatments where necessary.
Looking at factors such as sleep, stress, hydration, regular meals and potential migraine triggers may also be useful. Keeping a headache diary can help identify patterns and support decisions about treatment.
My priority is always to help you find the most appropriate care, whether that involves chiropractic treatment, medical support or a combination of approaches.
When Should You Seek Help for Headaches?
If you’re experiencing frequent or recurring headaches, particularly if they’re affecting your quality of life, it’s worth having them properly assessed.
Many headaches are not caused by serious conditions, but certain symptoms need urgent medical attention.
A sudden, extremely severe headache, particularly one that reaches maximum intensity within seconds or minutes, should be assessed as an emergency. Headaches accompanied by new weakness, confusion, significant visual changes, fever with neck stiffness, or other concerning neurological symptoms also require urgent medical assessment.
For more typical recurring headaches, identifying the type and any contributing factors can help you find a sensible way forward.
