Shoulder Pain Treatment in Bristol: How Chiropractic Can Help

Shoulder pain can make even the simplest everyday activities surprisingly difficult. Whether you’re struggling to reach overhead, finding it uncomfortable to sleep on one side, or experiencing a persistent ache around your shoulder blade, it can have a real impact on your quality of life. At Clifton Chiro in Bristol, I regularly see patients with shoulder problems, and with 26 years of clinical experience, I understand how important it is to identify what’s causing the discomfort rather than simply treating where it hurts.

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body. That flexibility allows us to reach, lift, push and pull, but it also means the joint relies heavily on the surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments for support.

One of the most common problems is irritation of the rotator cuff, a group of muscles and tendons that help stabilise and move the shoulder. This can cause pain when lifting your arm, reaching behind your back or lying on the affected side.

Other causes include frozen shoulder, where the joint becomes increasingly painful and stiff, arthritis, tendon injuries and problems affecting the joints around the collarbone.

I also look for is whether the pain is actually coming from the neck. Irritation of structures in the cervical spine can sometimes produce pain around the shoulder or down the arm, even when the shoulder joint itself is functioning normally.

How Do I Know What’s Causing My Shoulder Pain?

The location and behaviour of your pain can provide useful clues.

Rotator cuff problems often produce discomfort on the outside of the upper arm, particularly when reaching overhead. Frozen shoulder typically causes a progressive loss of movement, making activities such as getting dressed or reaching behind your back increasingly difficult.

Pain originating from the neck may be accompanied by stiffness, tingling or symptoms travelling further down the arm.

However, different shoulder conditions can produce similar symptoms. That’s why I always begin with a proper assessment rather than assuming the cause.

At Clifton Chiro, I’ll ask when your symptoms started, which movements aggravate them, and how they’re affecting your daily activities. I’ll then examine the shoulder, neck and upper back, checking movement, muscle strength and joint function.

How Can Chiropractic Help Shoulder Pain?

My approach to shoulder pain focuses on understanding how the shoulder works alongside the neck, upper back and shoulder blade.

These areas are closely connected. Good shoulder movement depends partly on coordinated movement through the shoulder blade and thoracic spine. Restrictions or muscle tension in these surrounding areas can sometimes contribute to discomfort.

Depending on what I find during your examination, treatment may include gentle joint mobilisation, appropriate chiropractic adjustments to restricted spinal joints, and soft tissue techniques to address muscular tension.

However, hands-on treatment is only one part of the picture. For many common shoulder conditions, particularly rotator cuff problems, progressive strengthening and rehabilitation exercises are central to recovery.

I’ll help you understand which movements are useful, which activities may need temporarily modifying, and how to gradually build strength and confidence in your shoulder.

Some conditions, such as frozen shoulder, require a different approach and can take considerably longer to improve. Where further investigation or another type of treatment would be more appropriate, I’ll explain that clearly and recommend the right next step.

Can Poor Posture Cause Shoulder Pain?

Many of the patients I see in Clifton and across Bristol spend a significant proportion of their working day sitting at a computer.

Long periods in one position can contribute to stiffness and discomfort around the neck, shoulders and upper back. It’s not necessarily that your posture is wrong, but that your body may benefit from more movement and variety throughout the day.

I often encourage patients to change position regularly, take short movement breaks and consider how their workstation is arranged.

Building strength in the muscles supporting the shoulders and upper back can also make everyday activities more comfortable.

The aim isn’t to maintain a perfect posture all day. It’s to develop a body that can move comfortably and tolerate the demands you place on it.

When Should You Seek Help for Shoulder Pain?

If shoulder pain has been present for more than a couple of weeks, is affecting your sleep or daily activities, or came on after an injury, it is worth getting it checked out.

A chiropractor can assess your shoulder to understand what is happening and discuss the best approach. Sometimes that means treatment here, and sometimes it means we refer you on to another professional such as a physiotherapist or your GP.

It is always better to get things looked at sooner rather than later. Early assessment can prevent a short-term problem from becoming a longer-term one.

If you are in the Clifton or Bristol area and you are not sure whether your shoulder pain is something a chiropractor can help with, feel free to call us or drop us an email and we can have a quick chat before you book.
