Whiplash Treatment in Bristol - What a Chiropractor Can Do

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries we see at Clifton Chiro, and one of the most commonly mismanaged. If you have been involved in a road traffic accident, even a low-speed one, and are now experiencing neck pain, stiffness, or headaches, chiropractic care is one of the most effective routes to recovery available to you.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash occurs when the head is thrown rapidly forward and then back, or vice versa, creating a sudden, forceful movement through the cervical spine. The term describes the mechanism of injury rather than a single diagnosis. What actually happens in the tissues varies: the ligaments, muscles and joints of the neck are placed under sudden extreme load, and the result can range from mild soft tissue strain to more significant joint and disc involvement.

The most common cause is a rear-end road traffic collision, but whiplash can also occur in sports, falls, and other sudden impact events. Symptoms do not always appear immediately, it is common for significant pain and stiffness to develop 24 to 72 hours after the incident, once the initial shock and adrenaline have subsided.

Symptoms of Whiplash

The most common symptoms I see in patients presenting to Clifton Chiro after a whiplash injury include neck pain and stiffness, often worse in the morning, reduced range of movement in the neck, headaches originating from the base of the skull, shoulder or upper back pain, and occasionally tingling or numbness into the arms if nerve irritation is involved.

Some people also experience dizziness, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and disturbed sleep. These symptoms can persist for weeks or months if the injury is not properly assessed and treated.

How Chiropractic Helps

Before any treatment, I carry out a full assessment to understand the nature and extent of the injury. This includes a thorough case history, neurological testing, and assessment of the cervical spine’s range of movement and joint function. If there is any clinical reason to suspect a fracture or more serious injury, I will refer for imaging before proceeding.

Chiropractic care for whiplash typically includes gentle mobilisation of the cervical and upper thoracic spine to restore movement and reduce joint restriction, soft tissue work to address the muscle guarding and tension that follows a whiplash injury, specific rehabilitation exercises to restore strength and stability in the deep cervical muscles, and postural and ergonomic advice to support recovery in daily life.

We tailor your treatment to your needs. Whiplash injuries involve tissue that is acutely irritated, and treatment needs to be adapted carefully to what the neck can tolerate at each stage of healing.

When Should You Seek Treatment?

The sooner, the better. There is good evidence that early mobilisation and appropriate treatment leads to better outcomes than rest and avoidance of movement. If you have been involved in a collision and are developing symptoms, booking an assessment promptly rather than waiting to see whether it settles on its own is the right approach.

That said, it is never too late to seek help. I regularly see patients who suffered whiplash injuries months or even years ago that were never properly addressed, and who have been living with ongoing neck pain and stiffness as a result. Delayed or undertreated whiplash can develop into chronic cervical dysfunction, and it is worth getting a proper assessment even if the original incident was some time ago.
